Seven people have sighted an ivory billed woodpecker in Arkansas. It has been thought extinct for 50 years. For birders this is huge big news! Here is the story on NPR.COM

Long Night
Seth had a long nght last night. For some reason he woke up crying and couldn't get settled down again. Debbie finally took him downstairs and got him to sleep in the bed down there. I'm not sure what it is all about, but it is very unusual for him. This morning he was obviously more tired than usual and fell asleep again about 7:30.
Mom and Dad are coming home from Peru today. I will be picking them up at the airport. I was going to take Seth, but their flight gets in at 6:20 which is too close to his normal bed time. I think after last night we will try to get him back on his regular schedule.

An Extra Day
Several times last night I woke up thinking that I had to be to work early today, only to realize, with relief, that today was Sunday, not Monday. It is almost like I've gotten an extra day out of this weekend.
Seth is getting his beth in the big tub now. He has graduated from his baby tub and seems to like playing in the water. Mom got a green frog cover for the tub spout. There is kid stuff everywhere in the house now. I just realized that I am referring to Debbie more and more as Mom. I guess that's inevitable in a nice sort of way.

Stolen Air Bags
Last night somebody stole the airbags out of our car. They broke the rear window on the passenger side, climbed in and removed both air bags. Apparently these guys knew what they were doing because there is no other damage to the car. Our insurance will cover it, but it is really irritating to have to deal with it.

6 Month Checkup
Today Seth has his 6 month doctor visit. He will get a couple of shots, I'm sure. It is hard to believe that he is 6 months old already.

A new Pope
By electing Cardinal Ratzinger to be the new Pope the College of Cardinals has opted to continue in the direction set by Pope John Paul. It seems that they have taken the safer conservative approach.
I am a diappointed that a more reform minded person wasn't selected. I can only see stronger conservatism in the future.

No Pope Yet
After two days in conclave the College of Cardinals has not elected a new pope. I think that is a good thing because it means there is at least some discussion and dissent occurring. I am hopeful that they pick a more moderate Pope. The church is in need of constant reform.

Cape May
Over the weekend we went out to Cape May, NJ in the RV with Debbie's paretns. They had never been out there before, so it was a good excuse to tour around a bit. Seth did well with the constant travel, although he did get tired of being in his car seat. I will post some pictures.

Home Opener
The Nationals won their home opener last night, 5-3 over the Arizona. It was fun to watch a home game in Washington. I don't think it would have mattered much to Washington fans if they won or lost last night. Everyone was just glad to have a team.
They have tonight off and, at least for this afternoon, sole posession of first place in the NL East.

The In-Laws
We are midway through week one of the most recent visit from the in-laws. Things are going well. I am up 5 to 1 at cribbage with Ted. Usually I don't win much. Especially when I am playing Debbie.

Antietam Battlefield
Today we took the in-laws to Antietam Battlefield. As usual we did the driving tour which is pretty interesting.
Afterwards we had dinner in Frederick. Seth behaved himself admirably.

Bolivia and Peru
The parents are off to Bolivia and Peru today. They are going to see Machu Pichu. It's interesting to note that for the seasoned travellers that they are, they are not sure what to expect on this trip. Maybe that's because they are seasoned travellers. For the next 20 days they will be touring around in the moutains and the jungles. They start in La Paz and end up in Lima. Sounds like fun to me.

Busy, Busy
It is getting toward the end of a very busy week. It seems like my projects are all piling up on top of each other at the moment. I think that's always the case when you have a big project and a bunch of little ones. The big one takes up most of your time and the little ones stack up and become annoying. Now it looks like I have two big projects to handle. It's going to be tricky.
At the moment my brain is beginning to get a little fried. I'm getting that "I've got to much to think about" state of mind.

Opening Day
Today is opening day for the Washington Nationals. They play the Phillies in Philadelphia at 3:05. Unfortunately I will be at the aiport at gametime waiting for a flight, so I will probably miss the whole game.

Pope John Paul II
In spite of my differences of opinion with Pope John Paul II, I am still a sad at the news of his passing away today. I clearly remember the two papal elections in 1978 and that they were interesting and exciting to me at the time.
I believe he tried to make the Papacy more visible and accessible to the world. And that's a good thing. May he rest in peace.

First Nice Day of Spring
We had our first nice day of spring today. I am looking forward to warmer weather and longer evenings. This weekend we switch to daylight saving time so next week we should be able to take the baby out for a walk after dinner. He really likes to be outside.
Next week I should get to see the cherry blossoms blooming downtown.
