Independence Air

I am flying Independence Air today from Dulles to Raleigh. This is the third trip I have flown with them and have been generally satisfied with the service. Unfortunately, they appear to be having some financial difficulty, but hopefully they will get that resolved because low cost travel makes a lot of sense. A few years ago this flight cost about $450 to $500 (before tax) on United express. Today it is around $100 (including taxes) on either Independence or Southwest. Additionally, these providers are are flying commuter jets rather than turboprops which makes the flight more comfortable as well as less expensive.

I figure the cost of driving to Raleigh and staying overnight to be almost the same as making a day trip with air travel. I also lose less time traveling. In fact the dollar cost is less than $30 which makes it flying cheaper when you consider the lost time.

The best thing is that I will be home in time for dinner with the family this evening.
