Jumping on the Bandwagon

The Potomac Cannons are now the Potomac Nationals. The Division A minor league team in Woodbridge, VA decided that it would make good marketing sense for them to have the same name as their Big League affiliate. They are only 30 miles or so from DC so they might be able to sell some tickets to baseball hungry Nationals fans.

I never really thought that the Cannons was a great name any way. Now, what are they going to do for a mascot? I guess Boomer (the cannon ball) is out of a job.

This is another misguided attempt by local politicians to "PC" up the DC area sports teams, like when they changed the Bullets to the more innocuous (and infinitely more lame) Wizards, because much like the Cannons the name was deemed "too violent."

Never mind that the Capitol's football team is a complete racist slur. What kind of message does that send to the rest of the world I wonder. Land of freedom and equality indeed.

I think it is simply an effort by the team owner to capture some of the excitement about the Nationals for his minor leage team. Most people wouldn't notice that the Cannons were affiliated with the Nationals, but it is pretty clear that the Potomac Nationals are aligned with the Washington Nationals.

Their other minor league affiliates are
New Orleans Zephyrs (AAA)
Harrisburg Senators (AA), Harrisburg, PA
Savannah Sand Gnats (A), Savannah, GA
Vermont Expos (A), Winooski, VT
Gulf Coast Nationals (R),Melbourne, FL
